Alec Lightwood Still Not Confirmed

Wow… so I just  read Cassie’s Tumblr,  you guys need to check out some of these key phrases:

There was a mixup and it was thought the confirmation letter was signed but it wasn’t, because the movie schedule had changed (it changes with every new draft of the script) and suddenly the actor wasn’t sure the new dates would work.

And in fact they didn’t. That actor isn’t going to play Alec. The scheduling didn’t work out. So. It is indeed a good thing I didn’t announce it then, annoying as it was for everyone at the time. I want you to be able to trust me and so not giving you information that may not pan out is important to me.

Then she went on to say:

As of this literal moment, I have not gotten the press release/go-ahead to say who Alec is, which means that the confirmation letter isn’t signed. Which means we do not have an official Alec. That could change any second. But I am not witholding information about who has been cast as Alec to be mean (seems pointless, and Variety would just carry the story anyway because they’d get the press release as it is meant for, well, the press). And I can’t tell you when Alec will be announced because it isn’t planned ahead like that: “We will announce Alec on the seventh of August, at nine am!” They wait for the confirmation letter to go through. Asking “When will we have Alec?” is like asking “When will it rain?” or “When will we have a car that runs on dandelions?”

So basically in sum-up, I don’t have an answer to those questions — we will have an Alec, and soon, because they cannot make the movie without him — and I will, as I have always promised, tell you as soon as I am able, and I will give you only the information I know is definitely true.

So what have we learned from this post?  This is what I get from it.  Alec is no longer British.

So I am really sad because Christian Cooke is a Brit and I really really wanted him.  As far as Kevin goes, someone said he put it on his twitter that he was Alec, and then it was deleted… but again it’s all just hear say until Cassie or the studio confirms it.

Not sure how I feel about it now..how about you  guys??

Have any of you been on Twitter today? SPOILER ALERT… chack out Cassie’s tweets! Squeeeeee!!!!

  • Jack

As much as i don’t want to be negative i think i’m kind of coming to a point where i hope it falls through and they try it again in a year or so.

    • Scrottie

I agree. I have seriously given up. I’m sorry. Turns out Kevin Zegers is Alec. I don’t know why they ^&$#@ they think it makes sense to hire a 28 year old actor to play a 19 year old, and then get a 29 year old to play one of the adults who is supposed to be about 36 to 38???? I was actually fine with Kevin Zegers being Alec but NOT when I realized they hired a young guy for Luke…. like…. ummm…. seriously? Are they F***in retarded? They’re only a year apart, and what IF the film is successful enough for 6 movies???? Well… both actors will be in their forties by the time we get to CIty Of Fallen Angels… and actually… it’s just as bad if the movie isn’t a big Fad Franchise like Twilight or Harry Potter. If it’s more like Percy Jackson like you said, then yeah they’ll probably only make three films…. but it’ll be large spaces between each film made…. When did Percy Jackson come out? And they just NOW started filming the next one???? See what I mean. They’re idiots. And for the record I am not judging on looks, I am judging on COMMON SENSE!!! It’ll look fine at first…. then what will they do when it’s years from now??? I agree with Jack, I hope it falls through. I’d rather their not be a movie anyway…. I felt that way since I first heard there would be a movie wayyyy back when Cassie first announced it. My reaction was “Ooooooohhhhh Noooooooooooo!” Yep… I am right back there again…

      • Andy

Family Guy style of “Ooooooohhh Nooooooo!” lol. I am with ya both. F@#$ this! NOW the ONLY way I’ll be convinced is if the film is a huge success, which by the way, just because a film is a huge success does not mean it’s a good film. There are some movies that are terrible but still win a sh@t ton of Oscars at the Academy. But yeah in the end… I’m sorry but I remained unconvinced until proven wrong, and when that day happens is when the movie is released, until then.. I will stick to my opinion that this sh%t BLOWS… literally.

  • well, at least it’s confirmed that it won’t be british dude. i mean, it could be a DIFFERENT british dude, but not the one she was talking about before. at least that’s a confirmation of something.

i think what bothers me the most about this is not necessarily that alec hasn’t been cast yet or that kevin zegers might be cast… though the age issue does trouble me, now that aiden turner’s going to be luke… but what really bothers me is that apparently the script keeps changing. if they’re going to start filming this month, shouldn’t they already have that finalized? THAT’S what i’m really worried about.

is that a normal thing, for the script to still be in “draft” stage all the way up to filming? scrottie, is that right? you know more about the film industry than i do…

No it’s not unusual for scripts to be tweaked slightly before filming. I’m pretty sure what happened is that Kevin WAS our Alec but because the change in filming dates he couldn’t do it so they still need an Alec. I’m actually happy about this piece of news from CC gives me hope they will cast Alec right.

    • torontogirl98

Yes, I think Mary is right. I know its pretty common to have little change to a script along the way, it means they are trying to make things better (or at least we hope). I think we only need to be concerned if we hear of major rewrites or anything like that.

      • Scrottie

It is common, sometimes it may even change while in filming. They never do it exactly to the script anyway. I learned that years ago wayyy before I even decided I wanted to direct films. I somehow found the script for Pearl Harbor, before it was released in theaters. Read the whole thing, then when I went to see it, there were so many things that were different and as a kid I was so confused about it. But yeah, think of the script as more of a guide than anything. And as for getting the actor for Alec prepared, a lot of actors sometimes go on set without once picking up the script. It depends. It’s not like a play where they HAVE to remember their lines or else. They have many takes to redo it to make it right.

  • Kerri

Honestly, I think this is a casting disaster. They should have had someone signed and prepped LONG ago. How is this actor supposed to get into character, perfect Alec’s little nuances and general moodiness on such short notice? Ugh.

  • Charlie

I think the actor is still going to be British. They said specifically that they wanted European actors to play the shadowhunters. I don’t think (hope really) that they’ll pick Kevin, because he’s linked to almost every YA film at some point. He was linked as playing Gale in Hunger Games. I think I’d be more bothered by his height than his age. He’s 5’9, which is average for a guy, but next to Magnus who is I believe 6’5, Alec will look like jailbait. And I’ve seen Kevin in multiple shows and movies, and he looks way shorter than he is in real life.

  • Scrottie

It would make me feel a little better if they changed their minds about making jace Izzy and Alec have accents and made them all American, but I am still feeling as if these people have lost touch with reality…

    • GeeGee

You mean they’re going to have British accents? The story takes place in NY for pete’s sake. I was very hesitant about JBC being cast as Jace but I thought “Well maybe if they change his hair, style and have him talk American, I’ll forget who he is”. Guess not. The JBC we see now is probably the one we’ll see in the movie (sigh).

      • Charlie

They won’t have British accents. I should have said Alec will probably be European. The idea is that since shadow hunters have their own country, they’d have their own accent. So, they want the actors playing them to be a little different. I think they’re going to have American accents, but it won’t sound like someone who grew up completely in America. There will be a faint remnant of something different. People pick up their accent by like age 6 or 7, so even if you immerse in a completely different culture, after that it’s difficult to change the way you speak. I have a friend who is half British/American, his parents are divorced so he’s been going back and forth his whole life. You can barely hear his British accent, but it’s there mixed in somewhere with his American one.

        • Scrottie

I could’ve sworn she said that the Director had decided that all the Shadowhunters, excluding Jocelyn and Luke would have accents??? Because if that’s true then why are they obsessed with hiring european actors for the characters that are true blue American, Simon was born in New York…. not that I have anything against Sheehan, but what about our new young American actors? I know we Americans look like freaking idiots all the time, but we deserve a chance, dammit!

          • Scrottie

Not to mention I can list some incredible American actors who can pull off british accents just as well as British can pull off American. Just sayin….

          • we don’t know for sure that they only auditioned european actors for the US-based roles, though. maybe there were US actors taken into account just as much as the european ones, but the latter just embodied the roles better. it COULD just be a coincidence. *shrug*

            LOL, *eternal optimist*

          • Scrottie

No that’s true, we don’t know for sure. But I am almost positive that she said that the Director had decided on British actors. I know, because I was angry when I read it, but I kept my mouth shut because people are soooooo sensitive…. and I remained Optimistic…

          • Andy

I remember reading that in her blog too. She said that they had planned on all Shadowhunters to have accents. Jocelyn, Luke, Clary, Simon, and Maia were not going to have accents. She didn’t say anything about Magnus, I remember wondering about that. Of course Raphael DID have a spanish accent, CC did point that out when we first encountered him in COB. So maybe they have changed their minds about the accents… I hope. Because it seriously would save all the confusion if they made them have true accents. All the non readers would be like “Well.. if they’re ALL from Idris, then why doesn’t Jocelyn or Luke have an accent, why wasn’t that explained? But haven’t they lived in New York most their lives? But Idris isn’t even in England?” It’s just smarter to do without the accents. Not to mention what about the readers who have lives? You know, the ones who aren’t like us and are getting this much worked up over a stupid movie. The ones who are going about their lives, every once in a while bringing their books up with their friends telling them it’s a pretty good book, they should try it. They are not on these sites everyday checking the news. “They’re going to hop in that theater and be like … WHAT THE F^%$#???? Since when do they all have accents?????” so yeah, best to do without them. I remember reading the same blog, I remember cause I got pretty pissed off about it too. That they had decided on accents, but since the actor of Alec is an old Canadian they might’ve changed their minds and CC just hasn’t mentioned it..

          • Charlie

I didn’t realize they were going to do English accents specifically. I thought it had to do with having a slight accent, but I could be wrong. I actually always wondered what people from Idris sound like. It wouldn’t be British, but something completely different. Course now that the midget(I’m annoyed about his height because Alec is supposed to be taller than everyone, but Jace and Magnus will be taller than him) has been cast, I don’t know what they’re doing.Izzy and Max probably shouldn’t have slight accents, although they could pick it up from their parents, but Alec and Jace would fit the right age group. I hope it’s just American, otherwise it’ll sound stupid.

  • GeeGee

God I hope it isn’t Kevin Zegers but I bet it will be. Just another disappoint if that’s the case.

  • Joi

I knew by the way she talked after Lena, Magnus, and Jared were announced that something had fell through with the British actor. What I wasn’t expecting was Kevin being cast as Alec. I don’t really know what they were thinking even auditioning him. I think he’s a decent actor but he looks every bit his 28 years. So much so, that when I saw the pics of the guy playing Luke, I immediately thought he looked about Kevin’s age. I was correct. He’s only a year older than Kevin. That said, if they choose him, I have no choice but to try an except it.
