‘Mortal Instruments’ Likely Casting Simon Lewis in July

Image Via fanpop

Simon, Simon, Wherefore art thou Simon!?

I have seen a lot of people be surprised we have a confirmed Alec and Isabelle but not a Simon because Simon’s a more major character. And that does make sense: I think a lot of movie casting is sort of top-down from the highest billed parts. Watching this casting happen, it’s been a very gestalt approach with casting all the characters with the same amount of attention and at the same time. I think it’s really interesting and probably good in terms of building a workable ensemble and how they bounce off each other (Alec and Isabelle have to seem like they really could be brother and sister; Simon has to have chemistry not just with Lily/Clary but with Jamie/Jace; they have to have very different energy. Luke and Valentine likewise have to have a very different look and energy.)

Anyway I have a favorite Simon but I can’t say who it is. I’m rooting for him quietly because I think he’d be awesome. My guess is we won’t have a confirmed Simon until July because of Reasons. But July isn’t that far off!

That’s like 10 days….like a week and a half!!! Till July. Then they will probably tell us the 31st, but HEY, that’s still plausible to start filming in August??? (is your cup half full yet?)

Shia LaBeouf (is that how you spell it?) to play Simon, I hope. I means, how coolios would THAT be?

  • alex

i like the thought of grant gustin as simon. he did play waldo in a short film…

  • Jen

I just posted the same thing twice! Didn’t think it had gone through the first time. Oops!

  • Jen

I meant the the best friend from Teen Wolf (Stiles). Funny, smart, and kind of goofy. Also quite cute. He would make a good Simon, but perhaps the schedueling would be a problem.

Dylan O’Brien from Teen Wolf would make a great Simon.

    • Scrottie

Too bulk and hot. I pictured simon thin, tall, and extremely cute. I think it would take away from Teen Wolf for Dylan to lose weight to look more like Simon, and he’s already signed on to the show, so I don’t see it happening. :(

You don’t have to worry about City of Ashes because they’ll probably only make City of Bones

    • Scrottie

      Premature ejaculation, much?

They haven’t even started filming yet and you’re so sure they’ll only make COB?

Yeah if they only planned on it, yeah if the film releases and fails, yeah. But they never mentioned that they were only planning on doing one film, nor do we have a way of knowing if the film will fail this early in production. We will only have to wait and see. Now if you feel that they will fail go ahead and express that, but don’t say it as if it is a known fact- or like you’re psychic or something. Sorry, it always bugs me when people speak so surely of something without the knowledge of whether or not it is fact first. So just say it like an opinion, not like a fact next time.

      • Jack

Obviously you didn’t see the word probably in that short sentence.

Nevertheless, all of these actors being casted are far too old for their characters. Even if COB is successful then they’ll PROBABLY only be able to film COA and COG since Lily, Jamie, and now Jemima will be pushing 30 if they decide to go all 6. Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games are mostly incomparable yet they all have one thing in their story structure that they do have in common. They follow the course of several years. Yet in TMI series, they haven’t even hit a year since Clary has first found out she’s a shadowhunter and that’s through five novels.

        • Scrottie

It’s not words that matter to me. It’s the attitude of of the post. Besides, you are forgetting that Harry Potter started off with children. The kids were all ten when the stories start, and 17 by the time the it’s over. In these films the kids will be already teenagers, and films always choose young actors in their early to mid twenties for such roles. Yes they may age, but it’s not like this hasn’t been done before. There are millions of ways they can make an actor look younger. Or sometimes they don’t even need to. Like myself I am 23, but I look 17. They could probably get away with me for at least 8 to ten years. Not to mention sometimes they are good at production speed, now if they continue like this speed, that’ll be irritating. However it’ll probably be within a course of six years total if they hurry along. But it’s COMMON for hollywood to chose twenty to twenty five year olds for teenagers. They do it ALL the time! They rarely have teenagers play teenagers. You don’t have to be an expert to know that, it’s just common sense.

          • Scrottie

P.S. and if the aging is THAT bad and they’ve made mega kupo bucks on it, they’ll probably recast. Again it’s been done before back in the 70 and 80′s when they didn’t even have the things we have today to make a film look real.

          • Jack

Well lesson learned, don’t be too bothered by attitude while the claim is still there. I understand the optimism I think every fan tries to have, but i think that their are just some pretty critical flaws with how this franchise is being put together. The director hasn’t made movies that hold many special effects for one.

They’re also casting british or english actors for these roles. We can try to work around that all we want but we know we have never pictured these characters that way. Clare described Will Herondale having an accent within the first couple pages of describing him. Don’t you think Clary, who has made so many deep observations of each character would point out their accent? Hahaha unless she’s not a New Yorker anymore and they changed that too.

          • Scrottie

@ Jack no I totally agree with you there. They did NOT have accents, I’m from New York originally and a bunch of teenagers walking around with british accents would stand out like a fish out of water. I think that is by far the stupidest decision the production has made. I can live with Jamie, Lilly, and whatever else, but THAT doesn’t make sense. And if they were all supposed to have accents then Cassie should’ve done what she did with ID, made it clear in the description in the books. who’s fault is that?

      • Kerri

If they only planned on making COB than how will they explain the brother-sister angle? It cant be explained without capturing Valentine, and that doesnt really happen for three books. And a lot of shit goes down in between COB and COG; Magnus and Alec, the fairie queen, Simons transformation, Maea… It just isnt a one movie deal. I think the box office in take should determine it.

Okay! Now onto Simon. I love him so much and pray to God they find a snarky enough actor to pull him off believably. In my mind camp-Simons cute as hell, so I’m hoping the actor is adorable… but not buff.

    • Lisa

Noticed how your attitude changed from them only making COB to making COG…

And we’re all just a tad irritated with negativity on this site. And your post was negative. There are ways of posting your opinion without having this negative vibe.

Anyways. Yes the actors are older, and the films will take a few years to film. It depends on the capacity of the films first off. You have to think of that first. Harry Potter books were MUCH more elaborate than Twilight, Hunger Games, or even TMI. So it took longer to film. Even in Harry Potter none of the actors were synced with the ages of their characters. By the time the characters reached their teenage years the actors were already on the verge of becoming adults. Those books were MUCH more detailed and not to be rude, more well written compared to TMI and Twilight. At least to me. Therefore it took a lot more script writing, storyboarding etc etc to get an understanding of what should go in the film and what should not. To make sure the plot lines of the movies were correct and they STILL could have been better! Lord Of The Rings the same thing. It may have only been 3 films but it took a VERY long time to film, produce, edit and storyboard because… well… those books were written by a VERY brilliant man. NOTHING can compare. So no offense to TMI but it shouldn’t be as nearly as hard to edit, produce, script, and storboard these particular books. Each book is really not that long and detailed compared to Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings. Twilight went fast because it was just some cute silly young adult romance novel. Nothing too elaborate there. Not that I am calling twilight cute, I am not a fan. It should be incredibly easy to produce these films. So in the end… yep… about 6 or 7 years should be the length of time to do all six. Because I seriously don’t see a lot needing to be left out of these films. The books are a three course dinner. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner! OVER… credits

        @Lisa

        Film school education, hm? lol

        • Lisa

Hahaha, actually I am in school for an English/writing major. I just know a little bit about film because my good friend wants to direct one day, and it’s all he can talk about most of the time. So I know so much just from hearing him talk about it LOL. Thanks for noticing. :)

          • Lisa

I just noticed we have emoticons. hahaha. wow I’m slow XP

          • Scrottie

Lol you’re welcome! I am actually studying film production, but I got tired of explaining production over and over and over and over and over to people who just don’t get it. So I just stopped explaining it, because it take soooo much explaining, and people still want to believe what they want to believe regardless the knowledge of what that is so… let them. I don’t really care much lol. But I agree with you about TMI not being all that difficult to storyboard. It’s not that detailed as HP and LOTR. I don’t even know if I ever want to know what it was like when they were sorting out what should be included in the films and what shouldn’t it must’ve been frustrating for the LOTR production because they honestly did a much better job at adapting those books to film than the HP production. I was happy with any of those movies until 6, and 6 still bothered me, but it was bearable. the first and second movies were fine they were the first books and the first two or three books of HP were more like TMI- simple. straight to the point type of plots so of course they were better. TMI shoud NOT be that hard to story board. I can remember each major scene without reading, whereas HP I forget A LOT! lol

          • Scrottie

I wasn’t* happy with HP films, sorry lol

    • Jersey

Is this the same Jack who wanted Saosin on the soundtrack suggestions?? If so I did post on them if you never noticed :) and I liked them too…

    • Real

I think if the first film is successful they’ll film the first three books and leave it at that. It’s perfect endpoint after angst, deaths, revelations and epic battle which wraps up the majority of plot threads and brings the hero and heroine together. No need to milk the franchise any further.

      • torontogirl98

Yes, there is for the sake of the fans, if you are a true fan you want to spend as much time in Cassie’s world as possible. That is if there is an audience for it!

        • Scrottie

I still don’t see where some people are saying the whole thing was wrapped up in COG??? I closed that book with anger when I was finished reading. My first thought was… “That’s it????” My mother and I were both extremely disappointed with the ending, and thought it couldn’t ended with a bit more bang like HP. And I don’t mean to compare everything to HP but the whole thing was written really well. and was really thought out. I can’t help but think all who thought that COG concluded everything is on some kind of drug. lol I’m sorry, but I did not see a conclusion. It was more like. “You like this RV Show? You LOVE it right? Well guess what? We’re going to end this season with a cliffhanger and then cancel it, forever leaving you in the dark of what could have happened.” I’m sorry, but nothing was concluded in COG

        • Real

LOL @ “if you are a true fan” You make it sound like a cult. I didn’t know fans of the TMI books were one homogenous blob only allowed to have own opinion. I am a fan of the books with my own opinion and I enjoy the books for what they are but don’t feel the series warrants an additional three books (but that’s for another post) or 6 films. If that means I’m not a “true fan”, then so be it.

“Cassie’s world”, as you put it, is fun to dip into from time to time but I prefer the real world. And the reality of it is that the YA market and the general movie audience are extremely fickle The TMI series is successful enough but they have not infiltrated popular culture or garnered the fanbase or support of Harry Potter, The Hunger Games or, as much as I hate to say it, Twilight when their movies came out. Unless your series is a generational and pop cultural zeitgeist like the Harry Potter books, Bond, Star Wars, etc audience interest simply will not be sustained in one series for more than 3 or 4 films at the most.

          • Scrottie

Again, I still don’t see how you thought an extra three books were not necessary since COG was a perfect ending. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion. I agree with you on that, but some opinions are just… dense? I think that’s the word I am looking for. Maybe she didn’t need THREE more books, but she definitely needed to wrap other things up. COG was NOT the best in the series. So far my favorites are COG and COLS when it comes to writing talent and plot those two are the best. (IN MY opinion) the least best I would have to say teeters between COLS and COFA I can’t decide which one is worse, but they both disappointed me along the lines of story and plot.

And just for the record, I had to throw this out there for everyone. not for you Real, this just goes out to everyone who likes to compare other books to Twilight. Those films were only popular based on being a fad. Yeah HP was a bit of a fad as well, but I see much more emotional attachment with fans of HP than of Twilight. I found those books to be poorly planned and poorly written. All the characters were very weak, and the idea of the stories supports women not being able to survive without a lover. Not to sound rude against the generalization of women, but I believe in being independent and I don’t have much respect for girls who fall apart over a break up and seriously act as if they may commit suicide over it. TMI may not be as elaborate as HP but I can say that at least all the characters are a bit real, and are strong and heroic with a side of insecurities. Twilight is no Lord Of The Rings, To Kill A Mockingbird, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Gone With The Wind, or even Harry Potter. It’s a horny book written for horny teen boppers. It’s not literature. Sorry, I had to get that out. lol :P

          • Scrottie

I meant COB as one of my favorites. Geez what is up with my effing typos????

          • Scrottie

Okayy, let me fix it completely. I meant COLS and COB are my favorites in the series, and COG COFA are the worst. You all have no idea how much I want to go on a cursing tantrum because I @#$^ up my post so bad. Like seriously??? How the hell does that happen??? Okay I’m good lol

          • Jack

I think COG had a descent ending. I personally believe she wanted to end it there but the publishing company saw them picking up so they told her to leave an opening for more books. So she couldn’t end it the right way she wanted to and had to leave it open which led most to a little disappointment. Lets just hope Tessa jumps in the finale or ill be a little pissed hahaha.

As for Twilight i only think they’re a big deal because of how Meyer wrote it in the first person. Every young tween that read it felt like they were Bella falling in love with something perfect. I’m personally not a fan of super hero vampires that glitter in the sun, but that’s just me.

          • Scrottie

That’s one thing that always kind of bothered me about her. She doesn’t seem to stand her ground when it comes to her writing. Like what you said about the accents. She made it clear will herondale had an accent, but she didn’t say ANYTHING about the tmi characters having accents. And now she supports the production making them all British??? I still don’t see how none of them see he COMMON SENSE. People are going to NOTICE a bunch of British teens running around manhattan. This isn’t a Harry Potter movie where they were BASED IN ENGLAND!!! They are in AMERICA and of all places to be in AMERICA they’re in NEW YORK!!!! Sorry. Lol I’m a New Yorker and this lack of common sense pisses me off XP

          • Jersey

I believe the fan base is big enough to support the film. I would also like to go on record saying that I NEVER HEARD OF TWILIGHT before the films came out. I did not see the first one until it went to dvd release no desire. I read the books after I saw the first two movies and had to push myself to finish them?? And still I have seen the rest of them in the theater and will go to Breaking Dawn Part II and support the franchise. Never got into Harry Potter books or movies ( sorry Scrottie) as for Hunger Games never had any interest in the books and I did see the movie with a friend who was dying to see it, I wasn’t the least bit impressed nor will I see the sequels. I think when it comes to moves it’s a hard call to make out of the box. I think that’s why studios agonize on which ones to adapt to film and which ones to leave alone. Twilight was huge even though truthfully the first movie was very cheesy but the budget was also very small. I have to agree with Scrottie that ending with COG wouldl be a mistake nothing was resolved except finding out that Clary and Jace were not related. If it flops they will scrap it but if it does well they would be foolish to stop at 3. Hell even Twilight and HP dragged out the last installment into two. If they make them fast enough they can get them all out there before movie goers get bored. I think they took way to long between Twilight movies and that’s what has slown that train to a screaching halt. Anyway sorry to ramble and yes you are entitled to your opinion as is everyone but alas when you put it out there someone is bound to disagree with you. In closing the word fan is short for fanatic def. person with extreme and uncritical enthusiasm ..that’s what we are here when it comes to Mortal Instruments so yes we want all six films and all three infernal devices :)

          • Scrottie

            Well said jersey! :D

  • Scrottie

After Simon and Magnus, we only have Valentine, Jocelyn, Hodge, and Luke. We don’t see everyone else til City Of Ashes so we’re pretty close! :)
