I like the choice they made of godfrey gao for magnus because it’s very much how I pictured him but I also think Aaron Yoo would have been great for the part. Magnus is probably more Indonesian than Dutch. His ‘Human’ father was Dutch, but Magnus’ REAL father was a Demon. So technically he is more Indonesian than he is Dutch, because his mother was only part Dutch.

Hey ya! I’d finished reading the two volumes ‘ The Infernal Devices’ and it had more detailedl ,description on Magnus! He’s half Dutch and half Indonesian and he has brown skin, looks a lot his Indonesian Mommy apparently….and I want to add to a comment earlier, age does matter at a certain point but doesn’t necessarily has to be the exact age to the fictional character BUT fits the character image and can bring out the character. EX. In the hunger games movie, Katniss is played out by a 21year old even though in the book she’s 16, and same goes for other character’s in the movie. Anyways I hope they would introduce a new suitable actor that can bring out Magnus chara very well *finger*cross*
We know that already, we’re talking about ages that are ten years or more apart from the character Darren is in his thirties, magnus is supposed to look 19 by the time they start filming City Of Heavenly fire he might be in his forties, maybe even fifties. he might look young now, but suddenly he will age. Harry Potter took ten 12 years to complete. it’ll probably be about the same for the mortal instruments. If he is 36 now, then by the time we’re done he’ll be almost 50. Lilly is 22, and Jamie 23, we’re obviously not upset about they’re ages, cause they already look young, and they can be made to look a little younger. So using an example such as the actress for Katniss is 21 when Katiness is in fact 16, wasn’t legit. Give us an actor/actress who is 40 playing a 20 year old and then we’ll talk…

Like Scrottie said, the actress playing a 16 year Katniss isn’t really a comparison. That’s only five years difference, and besides… at age 21 you were only a teenager a year and a few months ago. depending on when she turned 21. Ten years and only a couple of years is a huge difference. Once that ten year mark hits, then you have to remember that it’ll take about ten years to complete each movie… therefore there is TWO DECADES between the characters age and the actor’s age….
I haven’t read the previous 40+ comments so forgive me if somebody has already said this, but I’ve always Magnus to look 19, but sophisticated and mature? If you’ve ever seen the show Sanctuary, the main character is like 247 years old, actor is around 40, and in the TV show she looks 40 but more mature and wise.
Oh it would definitely be a dream come true if Haruma was cast as Magnus. I’ve known about him since his acting debut and I know he’s a wonderful actor. I am fairly sure he doesn’t speak English, though…which makes me very sad. Hahaha Good suggestion though!

Yes, but Mangus’s eyes are described as curved and Darren Criss doesn’t have curve eyes plus he is of mixed descended so he technically 1/3 Chinese and 1/3 Filipino and he’s also Spanish and Irish descent too so he’s actually not half-Asian more like 2/5 plus he’s 25 right now and Mangus is supposed look like he’s 19 so he’s probably too old now. I think Haruma would be perfect since he is Asian and they can obviously get a dietetic coach to teach him better English.

The fact that she considered an actor who doesn’t look asian at all, when she has thrown a fit before that Magnus is supposed to LOOK asian just proves my point! She did the same exact thing with Jace! Back when the movie was just a rumor, the Graphic Novel was in the works some fans basically thought the artist drew Jace too butch looking. I thought he looked fine.
Then when Jamie Bower was in, all of a sudden Jace isn’t supposed to look butch, rough, tough, and hot, he is supposed to look thin, girlie and odd. now NOT that I don’t like Jamie, I am fine with Jamie. Camelot proved to me he wasn’t a scrawny boy anymore, but a man fighting in a battle. So I am completely fine with Jamie, I still think he isn’t good looking enough for Jace, but… then again… who is? haha. But the point I am bringing out is… why in all the name that is holy does she keep changing her opinion on what the characters look like???
JK Rowling didn’t have 100% say on the film production either, but when they did she was a B*TCH about some things. And that’s how an author usually is when it comes to something they work so hard on! I think the difference between CC and JK is the fact that JK wrote Harry Potter way way back when she was a single mom. She wrote it specifically for her children. And coming from someone who grew up in a single parent household, you tend to create a much stronger emotional bond with certain things than most casual people do… mostly because it’s all we have. When my grandparents sold their house that they owned since right before I was born, it took me a whole year to even ENTER their new place. That’s how depressed I was about it. I never had a common house to call home, I have lived in at least ten different houses since I was born. My grandparents stayed in ONE. If I were to have a shrink I think the doc would tell me my biggest mental issue is ‘Change’. We single parent kids just cling to things, man. And when JK finished that last book they were seriously hysterical and depressed that it was finally over. for at least fifteen years these kids grew up with Harry Potter in their life. So they care more about those characters than ANY of us fans ever will.
I don’t see the same kind of love given to CC’s characters. Again I don’t mean to bash her in anyway, I just feel that she doesn’t LOVE her stories the same way my mom does when she writes, or the same way JK does when she writes, or even Stephen King (perhaps?). My mom will every once and a while get teary eyed telling me how she had a trunk full of poems and short stories written by her. and my Grandfather threw it out without realizing what my mom kept in it. Yes, my mom will CRY whenever she talks about it. I don’t see the same love with CC, I am sorry, but that’s just my opinion….
If you google ” Cassandra Clare on Darrin Criss” you gwt quite a few tweets where fans asked her who she would want for Magnus and multiple times she answered Darrin Criss!! Let me tell you the Jamie casting was something I could get over but to have Magnus played by an almost 30 year old?? NOT!!!!
The vibe I am getting from her is that she is refusing to be HONEST. None of us are going to hate her, or dis her for being honest. She seems to be agreeing with every little thing the production is doing.. c’mon! I highly doubt she agrees to EVERYTHING!! lol. None of the actors are going to be perfect! Like Jamie, no he’s not at all what I pictured but I think he’ll be a great actor for the job. It’s almost impossible to make it look that perfect anyways. But just because the production chose him to play Jace does not mean she HAS to agree 100% either. There are LOADS of writers who were honest about how productions did their books. I KNOW she can’t be 100% on Jamie, she is just lying to herself and to everyone. She got annoyed when all the fans thought the artist drew Jace looking too butch for the graphic novel, and said “That’s how I envisioned Jace. I think it’s fine!” Then the opposite of her opinion is chosen for the movie, and all of a sudden Jamie is perfect???? Sorry, but I think this chick is more confused than Alec was about his sexual orientation! She can say something like “Yes I think Jamie is a wonderful candidate for Jace. Did I picture Jace like that? No… but I trust Jamie to do a wonderful job!” There! Is that so hard?
See, a body does not matter to me, I like an adorable face, and the muscles are just a bonus. To me Jamie looks…. odd… like his face was displaced somehow. So it’s not the bulking that will satisfy me, it’s his face. I pictured Jace with a very strong jaw, and high cheekbones. He had strong muscles in his face as well as his body. I pictured a very rough looking punk/biker new yorker, with silky, shiny thick mane of curls for hair. Jamie just… looks odd. So It’s a problem for me because I don’t find him sexually attractive in the least. To me; a guy is hot when he has a hot face, it’s not always the muscles. Hot guys have this alpha-male theme to them. Whereas Jamie, to me, just looks like all the emo kids back when I was in high school who use to get beat up by the apha-males of the school. I don’t mind CC liking him or disliking him for Jace I just want her to be clear on where the hell she stands on her opinion. Cause it changes constantly. One minute Jace is supposed to look like this… oh wait… now he looks like this. So I am sorry, but I don’t go by her word when it comes to the visual of the books anymore. I actually find it kind of sad that the Director of the film remembered details from the series, that she didn’t and it’s supposed to be her baby. To me she doesn’t LOVE her stories like so many authors out there do. Not that she hates them, or is only in it for money. I look at her and I see her as someone who wrote as a side activity, and then got lucky enough to make it her career. Compared to other authors who’s ‘passion’ was to write, and now they do what they LOVE for their career. Yes acting is in an incredible importance, that’s why I am okay with Jamie, I am sure his acting will be fine, but will I pick up the books and picture Jamie when I read…. no I will not. I will still picture the same guy I pictured since May 2007. I never pictured any celebrities for Jace or any of the characters, I always pictured completely unique people in my head. So in my opinion it doesn’t matter how well Jamie does, it just wont erase my imagination. It’s better to be your own artist, then to copy from someone else’s work. That’s how I feel about picturing actors for book characters. Use your imagination… don’t take the easy way out and look for actors who might look like them….
No one is expecting you to replace the way you imagined Jace with Jamie. And of course Jamie isn’t going to satisfy every fan. That’s impossible. But I think it’s too soon to judge him so. We haven’t seen him become Jace yet. That’s like on Hunger Games for me. I don’t imagine Peeta as Josh Hutcherson at all. For me, his face is completely wrong, but he did so well as Peeta that I was completely satsified. I had no more doubts about it, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. Just gotta give them a chance before jumping the gun. (By the way, I’m not trying to start a Hunger Games discussion, just giving an example.)
I think CC does love her stories. If she didn’t then she wouldn’t be able to write them so well and passionately and with such fire; so many people wouldn’t be able to identify with her characters. She’s working on two separate series, one five books in, and is preparing for another one. Of course some things will slip her mind. She’s not superwoman. I think she does have a firm opinion on Jace, and that’s probably how the manga artist drew him, which was what she knew Jamie could become. Like I said, I think she was sold on his acting rather than his build. Though, I’ve always envisioned Jace as lean, not bulky, and I could’ve sworn that was how he was described in the books. Perhaps you’re on to something. Maybe we should just ask her how she envisions Jace to see if she’s catering to others lol.
Well, I didn’t see him as big as Arnold Schwartzenager. lol. But I did see him with a strong tough body. He’s a demon hunter… so it’s kind of difficult to live that life and NOT have a body. lol. I pictured him with a slim build, but he still had muscles. Jace is only 17 and it’s rare to see a 17year old as big as Arnold. hahaha. But I still imagined muscles. I think Jamie has a very girlie looking body, men don’t have hips. lol. They just don’t. I’m satisfied with Jamie, really I am. I loved him in Camelot… I didn’t really like the show itself, but I loved him in it. So I think he will be great, but nothing will make me sexually attracted to him. I still think he looks really odd. But I love him as an actor, so I am completely okay with it. Whether they got a hot guy to play him or just another Jamie, I already know it’s not going to be perfect. We all envisioned things a little differently. So duh, of course it’s not going to be perfect. lol. But Stephen King hated The Shinning’s film adaptation whereas most of his fans LOVED it. So It;s not whether or not she agrees or disagrees with us… her fans. I just rather her be herself. We may all think the film is great, while she silently thinks that it was horrible. BUt I see her lying to everyone and saying it was great. I would respect her more as a writer if she was that completely honest. And to be honest I find it a little crazy that she can toss what she writes aside and almost immediately jumps to the next story. I usually have ideas that pop in my head like crazy, but it takes me forever to get just one of them down. Especially because they all start to run together. My mind is ADD so it’s already unorganized in there no matter how hard I try to keep it straight. lol. But yeah I am totally for Jamie, and I am so SICK of hearing about Alex P it’s seriously needs to end. lol. I just… don’t find Jamie attractive in general. If we knew each other in person without any of these books existing I would have to be pretty drunk just to kiss him. lol. I know that sounds bad, but I have some guy friends in my life who have the hots for me, and I just… don’t… find them attractive. I have gotten completely drunk, and I STILL wouldn’t let them touch me in my drunken state. hahahaha. So that’s just my sexual preference talking. I don’t mean it, nor can I help it. I usually only date white guys. My dad hates me for it, because he’s black and he assumes I am racist against my own peeps, but that’s so not it. I just find that white guys are wayyy cuter. While my friend Jamie thinks that black guys and mexican guys are the hottest thing on the planet. lol. And she’s white. (I’m biracial for the record lol) So yeah, I love Jamie, for his acting, and funny personality, but I just can’t ever see myself dating him… now lets pretend that could happen, minus his fame and all… I am NOT one of those girls who force my boyfriend to change. There are countless times where the word ‘Lean’ is used to describe Jace in the books, but it’s always put like this “Lean muscle” so yeah, Jace is supposed to look pretty athletic, but I agree not huge. Well, my school has forgien exchange students from Thailand and Korea and they all speak english, so I think its required for Asian students to learn English or they won’t gradurate just like in America we take Spanish or French, so I wouldn’t be surpised if he knows English since he’s already gradurated.

I live in the US. I used to watch all kinds of Asian movies and dramas. I tried looking, and I can’t find anything about him speaking English. :\ There are a few Japanese actors that I know of that can speak English; one of them does VERY well because he grew up in Sweden.
