Cassie Clare Talks City of Bones Movie Updates

Ah my friends. Here we are again, bundling up in a blanket of Cassie warmth as she calms all of our fan-soles with matters of TMI movie. Cassie has recently posted a lengthy and comprehensive reminder to all of us that the way things are right now, are simply the way they are. Concerning the progress of the movie:

“Now, I am not saying “Everyone calm down! They will make the City of Bones movie!” Because, TBH, I have no more idea than anyone else whether they will make it. I have always tried, and I genuinely apologize if I was misleading, to be clear that — as it says on my website — they are developing the book as a movie project and the movie isn’t greenlit.

(“Greenlit”: meaning, the studio has signed off on making this film and they are rolling cameras.)

That doesn’t mean nothing is happening. Things continue to happen, chugging along behind the scenes, but either the sort of things I’ve been asked not to talk about (and trust me, you don’t care — no one out there is hanging around wondering breathlessly “Have they costed this film yet?”), or the kind of things I don’t know about because I am like fiftieth down on the food chain of finding out about anything.”

This is just a tiny excerpt. Please, please, PLEASE go to her tumblr to read ALL of it! There is much to learn concerning casting, Jamie Campbell Bower and the process of making a movie from Books. My heart was hurt when reading between the lines at the reasons Clare felt she had to address certain issues. Sad face. I will take this opportunity to piggy-back on Clare concerning Alex Pettyfer. I do not post any Alex anymore because he was not cast. (Just FYI for those of you that submit work with him, now you understand why I don’t promote it). So….I’m BEGGING you to GO READ IT NOW!!!! And let’s all remember to be the best flipping fan-base this universe can muster!

Quit reading me. Don’t you know how to listen??

I’m serious! Go read it!

Look I don’t want to be mean, but i don’t think that lily or jamie or right for the parts and really don’t desreve to get the part. Alex Pettyfer would be like 100 times better. I really hop they re-cast!

  • madison

shouldnt cassie be the first person to be let known of something? I mean, she did write the book that they r turning into a movie and if she hadnt writin the book there wouldnt be a movie. *takes a breath* i wish they would just let cassie write everything for the movie, it would be perfect, considering the fact that she knows her books more than anyone else. Just a thought

I know, the crappy thing is they usually never do that. I actually think they are keeping her pretty dang involved compared to others made into films. I didn’t keep up with any Harry Potter movie news waaaaayyy back when they first started. 1.) I was only about 11 years old when the first movie was released, and two… our computer was crappy, and this was back when the internet still kind of sucked, lol, at least compared to they it is today. =) BUT I don’t think they had Rowling as involved with the casting as much as they have with Cassie. I could be wrong though. I think they had her apart of casting, because I remember reading somewhere that she took one look at Daniel when they sent her his audition tape, and was like “That’s my Harry!” So I think they had her involved in casting, and I must say they did very very well with the casting for those films until they got to the later series. I didn’t like Umbridge, Professor Slughorn, or MadEye Moody. I pictured them to be incredibly different when reading Harry Potter. Other than that everything was pretty damn great. Yeah the kids changed with age, but that’s always hard with films. Emma was production excuse. Hermione didn’t focus on her outer beauty until book 4 with the Yule Ball, but they made her start looking really pretty in movie #2… wayy too early. lol. Harry was suppose to be really really skinny and tall, but Daniel ended up becoming quite bulky and short. But I was still happy with him, mostly cause he was there since the beginning so why change now? And at that point you’re just use to seeing them. So… yeah. lol. Other than that I thought casting was done fairly well with those films. So I don’t know how much more involved Cassie will be from here out, I think she would be the first to know things, just because of her place. But as for production probably not. They almost never include the authors from books, which sucks. =(

      • madison

well, i guess we better be happy that she gets at least SOME input of the script and actors. :)

btw what do u think of Chandler Canterbury for max?

        • Scrotty

He’s a little cutie. He has the max look for sure. I pictured Max’s hair to be a little curlier and darker, but his face and eyes are soooo close. I have never seen this kid in anything though, I think “After Life” is on Netflix, and I have actually been eyeing that movie for a bit so I’ll have to check into it. =)

        • Selena

i didnt know that is who’s gonna play max…i think he’ll be good

  • jojo

ugh, curses, i’m writing this on my ipod and i accidentally submitted ny comment before finishing it :/
anyways, as i was saying, if anyone is rude or complains or says something negative about the mortal instruments then…then…dang. i’m not as quick on my toes as jace…or simon (heehee). point being DON’T SAY SOMETHING IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANYTHING KIND TO SAY AT ALL.
    go mortal instruments!!!!! and cassandra clare and jamie campbell bower and lily collins!!!!!! and jace and simon and clary and alec and magnus and isabelle and, well, you get the idea (;

  • jojo

WHAT?! When i was reading what cassie wrote on tumblr the only thing i could think of was, and i repeat, WHAT?! Well that wasn’t the only thing…i also felt really sorry for cassie and for jamie campbell bower who seems like such a sweet guy and an amazing actor. I am SO glad alex pettyfer isn’t going to play jace… i’m also glad that his character died in ‘in time’ *cue evil laugh* that was sorta random…and maybe mean…but if anyone is rude to the mortal instruments THE MOST AMAZING SERIES EVER,

  • TeamEdwardJace

they probably are working on this but this film should be relit. this is one of the films work making and yes they do need to in mind that in five years, jamie and lily may bee too old to play the parts though i love them and i love them as jace and clary. i really hope things pick up soon but I understand it’s hard to make a film and there are things beforehand. but please screengems, get this greenlit! i will be very dissapointed if this isn’t made. for the love of the angel, please lol. now depending when cob of bones is greenlit or people are cast and they decide to make the o books into films (and i hope they make all of them), they may have to shoot a bunch at once or at least within few months of each other. ad people ap would have made a great jace, but he likely isn’t going to be jace. and for other castings of izzy, simon, jocelany and everyone, why not look at some potentail fan suggestions and cosnider them and then talk to these actors and actresses and see if they’re interested while also holding an audtion process.

They don’t want to hire on people before knowing whether or not the film is set and stone. Production companies don’t care if they make actors look bad, but they care deeply about their own reputation. Hiring on an actor when you cannot say whether the film will be made or not is unfair to an actor looking to get paid. Yes some productions get everything ready, actors, sets, cameras etc etc, and yet not be made, but usually those are films by private companies like Spielberg, Lucas or Jackson. Usually actors will be prepared for that when the studio is private, AND usually it’s not exactly cancelled, but more like postponed indefinitely. The Hobbit is a good example of that. It’s been ready for some time now, it was cancelled, and now it’s finally ready to be released soon. I think Jackson got on that as soon as business with The Lord Of The Rings died down, which was ages ago now. He had actors hired, a screenplay ready, and set on board, but then the company wigged out on him and cancelled the production… well… postponed it. I personally don’t have a liking towards ScreenGems, and don’t really trust them with this production. So far I am not thrilled with other productions they have done. There are very few films that they have produced that wowed me. The Exorcism Of Emily Rose was an excellent film, however, we had an amazing crew who made the film what it was. Amazing actors chosen for the roles, and a duo directing. I very much enjoyed Underworld, but the plot in each film always seems so dense. Like more can be put in there without making the film lengthy. So I guess what I am saying is their films seemed to be more company profit rather then the crew of the film being highly involved in the production like The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. They seem to do better with the more serious stuff such as that one. Their Horror and Action films are focused mostly on effects no plot, or good acting. Horror films are focused on the fact that the girls are running, tripping, crying and screaming, and yet their shirts are clean white, and one trinkle of blood falls from one of their nostrils. She somehow gets wet, and her breasts are more noticeable. Now I know some people are gonna be like “But Emily Rose was a Horror film” Yes, but it was also not falling under what me and my best friend call The Horror ritual. Five actors… first one died by going off alone… second same thing… two people go off to makeout… die while doing so, and the last person is either the hero and lives, or makes you to believe is the hero until a surprise attack happens and they die. Emily Rose focused on the “Possibilities” of whether she was either possessed or surely just crazy. The directors gave you two different point of views, one from a medical perspective, and one from a spiritual perspective. You as the audience makes your own choice on whether to believe that something dark and beyond our knowlegde was attacking this poor girl, or perhaps she was only just psychologically insane. Not at all a typical Horror film. However, though Screen Gems has yet to really impress me pass Emily Rose, I am keeping the faith, best to be positive instead of negative I guess.

AP just didn’t want to risk his rep. And I understand that FULL HEARTEDLY!!! People DO need to just get over that! Because I don’t think he would ever take it, even if they offered him all the money in the world. I don’t think he wants to play teens anymore. He wants more mature roles, and as an actor I can full understand. So everyone needs to give up NOW on AP, cause it’s just not gonna happen.

In response to Mary59: I agree with you, except for AP’s acting. I don’t think he’s great, but you can’t say he’s terrible either. I get really frustrated when people judge an Actor on one film or even if a few weren’t great. It’s hard for them as it is. One film can ruin their reputation in Hollywood, and make it hard for them to find work. Because Directors, and production companies HAVE to be concerned with waisting money just like any other industry. HOWEVER, at least WE the fans should not jude one film on an Actor’s entire outlook. Tom Cruise is an excellent example. Most people say he sucks, but have any of you seen ‘Interview With A Vampire’??? Holy shit… excuse my language but his portrayal in that film was FASCINATING!! Till this day I forget that I am seeing Tom cruise when I watch it. If you’re audience continued to forget that it’s YOU underneath that character you are playing, than that means you are doing a FANTASTIC job!!! But now he just choses these bad scripts to play in. All these weird as films like Vanilla Sky, or action packed like Mission Impossible don’t do anything to PROVE his acting skill, more less disprove them. Alex Pettyfer has only done the same thing. Mostly action packed films, or cutsey teen films. You can’t prove or disprove his acting skills, because those films aren’t meant for such acting skills in the first place. That’s like watching Star Wars for the dramatic effect of the actors…. really? lol

Now on to my next subject. Since I mentioned that sometimes these actors choose terrible scripts that don’t help their reputation, you ALSO have to remember that scripts change constantly, constantly, constantly, constantly before a film is greenlit. Sometimes they only change once, and sometimes they change even when IN production. And it is ALSO bad reputation to back out of almost any project when you’re already on board with it. Once you say “Yes, I’ll do it.” Going back on your word makes you look incredibly irresponsible to the Film industry, thus making it difficult for you to find work as an actor. They are also required to speak well of their films, you notice how all these actors love almost every film their in. Seems kind of unlikely since they are in so many, and you are not always going to enjoy every film you see regardless if you are in it or not. Sometimes… yes they are honest.

“Orsen Welles was the first film I was in, that I didn’t check my watch waiting for it to end.” ~ Zac Efron. Most guys don’t watch cutsey teeny movies, why would actors watch it, even if they’re IN IT? They do what they have to do to get by, to get a name for yourself out there first. THEN maybe you’ll get in better roles. AP is going through the same thing every actor goes through. It’s not common for an actor to be wonderful in the first couple of films he’s in. John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, and Robin Williams all started in sitcoms that really weren’t the greatest. lol. Every once in a while you have a Prodigy show up. Dakota Fanning, Spencer List, Macauley Culkan, and Elijah Wood. They started out in pretty damn good roles, and very very young ages. But it is rare that you get that lucky….

As for the movie not being in Greenlit… there can be many reasons as to why. You guys forget that films are not easy to make… but mostly NOT CHEAP!!! hundreds and millions of dollars goes into most of these films, and they want to be SURE that they will get all of that back during opening. Sometimes there are low budget films made, which usually are amazing, but this requires a lot of work, therefore, a lot of money. We’re going to need a lot of make up artists, costume and graphic effects since this film falls under the action/fantasy genre. Movies like Lucky Number Slevin, didn’t require so much computer, and make-up work, so there low-budget film didn’t even NEED to be high maintanence. AND it was a very very good film. Even with all of this going on, there is a very high chance that they could lose these actors before they start. So yes, maybe JCB will be recast, but it definitely wont be AP to recast. Then maybe he wont. I don’t see Lilly backing out, she’s seems to be REALLY into the character. So does Jamie, but he’s a little bit more of a high maintenance actor. AND he’s also a guy. lol not to sound sexist but girls become attached to almost anything, whereas guys can easily have a favorite band one week, and next week they have a new favorite. I think it’ll be a while before he ever backs out, if he even does. But I can see him finding something better, and saying “Sorry, but this is a better opportunity for me.” Like…

getting cast in a Spielberg film… if it were me getting cast in a Spielberg film… no offense guys but I would be like “SEE YA!” to this film. Working with him is like the only chance of meeting God, that is how highly respected he is in the FIlm Industry. Him, Lucas, Cameron, Emmerich, Jackson, and a couple of more that I am too lazy to name… are THE most highly respected Directors in Hollywood right now. They can pretty much do almost whatever they want with a film without being judged by a production company… most because… THEY OWN THEIR OWN!!!! lol. They are so big that they are their very own companies. They go by their OWN rules. We don’t have that with this film. We have a brand new director with TMI, as well as other productions which are… I must be honest… making me a little nervous. But again, he’ll never get the chance if no one ever wants to give him one.

Some movies move swiftly with production, and some don’t It’s just the way it is. and you all have to be patient.

    • Mary59

You’re right. Most of actors have to work to improve their skills. Until now I didn’t see AP play any role that amazed me, but all the movies that he did, he didn’t need to prove how good he was. Maybe he will surprise me someday. I hope he does. And I know that movie takes a while to be made and I DO know that even after the script was wrote, they change it a lot. It’s not nice to wait this long for a movie, but that’s not what makes me upset. What makes me upset it’s the lack of news. I know that most of thing they can’t actually tell. But sometimes I just wanna know if they are actually working on something.

      • Scrotty

Oh yes, it is soooooo frustrating because it SEEMS like they aren’t doing anything, when I am sure they are at least arguing the script, or the budget… something. I think what’s going on right now is a lot of political debate… which sucks!!! Production companies can be whiny little brats. And I have a feeling that the company is holding back for some reason, I don’t know why, or what but I just have a feeling. I could be wrong… as a matter of fact I HOPE I’m wrong, because that means they are either avoiding the project all together, or they are procrastinating due to other big film hits being filmed at the time. That’s bad because if they wait too long, than we might have to start all over again with casting. Too be honest I can see Lilly aging quicker than Jamie, he looks so young I think he’s good for another couple of years. Lilly even looks a little too mature looking to be Clary for me, but make up goes a long way. I pictured Clary to look pretty young and petite. Like Ellen Page, and Lilly looks a little too old, and not so petite. BUT I still like her, nothing is going to be perfect to our imagination from the books. So I am still happy with her. But with how much time they are taking, I don’t know if I can stand another Jace search… even though Jamie doesn’t LOOK like Jace to me, I just can’t go through it again. hahahaha. I just want them to film incase that happens. I can stick with MY Jace in my head, and handle Jamie for the movie, but if they start over I think I’m gonna cry hahaha

        • Mary59

That’s my biggest fear. The actors age, and they will need to recast. It took almoust six months to cast 2 characters. I CAN’T go through that again. They won’t be young forever. Lily, in my opnion looks young, for now. She’s already 22 or 23, I guess, and she will play a 15 years old girl! Everytime they say they will start filming, but they never start. And the clock is ticking. Lily and Jamie are aging. I’ll just be happy when they announce a release date. Then, I’ll know that they are gonna start filming.

”…I have nothing against him personally (he’s quite nice on the phone!) but I don’t understand ‘dream-casting’ someone who specifically didn’t want the part…”

couldnt help but think thats exactly how jace would have responded^^
i really loved the idea of alex playing jace in TMI but if he – like cassandra clare said – didnt want the part then he wouldnt have potrayed jace as well as jamie will, im sure about that! its the same with the potter cast! dan, emma, tom, rupert (and at least the whole young maincast) were all HUGE potter fans before they got cast and thats the important thing, if not the most important! its about to know and LOVE the character you portray even if he’s complicated like jace or evil like draco. i am a huge twilight fan so i am of course really glad that a twilight family member will be a part in the movie adaption of one of my favourite book series and he’s a great actor too :)

  • Mary59

I don’t know why this movie is taking so long to be made. And why the movie is not greenlight yet? They already release a synopsis – not a good one, but a synopsis. They don’t have reason (as far as I know) to take this long. First it was AP cast, then it was the script that was horrible, now what? And she said that they won’t cast while the movie isn’t greenlight. And I don’t understand why people is still upset with the fact that AP wasn’t cast, and sometimes they still have hope that the studio will change mind and cast AP as Jace. Before JCB was cast I truly wanted AP to be cast. But it didn’t happen and right now I’m glad it didn’t. AP just look too old to play Jace and now I realize that he wouldn’t be a great choice. Sorry for all AP fans, but I don’t think that he’s a good actor. They need to get over. AP wasn’t cast and won’t ever be cast. Doens’t matter how much you want or how much you say that the movie is gonna suck without him (yes, I already saw people saying this) or you won’t watch it. It’s not gonna change anything. AP wasn’t cast, JCB blew everyone away with his audition, it’s not his fault that he’s good. And I recognize that I still don’t think that JCB is atractive, but I will give him a chance, because everyone deserves one. So if you wanna judge him, judge after you see oficial pictures and watch the movie.

  • torontogirl98

Thanks for this, its killing me not knowing anything for certain and I can’t stand that people are still hating on JCB and making fan stuff with Alex. Sorry people but get over it already!

    • Jersey121

Man if I had dollar everytime I wanted to say that to someone I would be rich!!

      • Scrotty

As much as I agree, I have a little bit of a problem with people disliking our fanart for not making Jace look more like JCB. I didn’t picture Jace that way. I have a very distinct image in my head of Jace. AP has similar features to the Jace that exists in my imagination, yes. Still not quite Jace. AP has a squared chin, and jaw, I pictured Jace to have a very angular jaw, and narrow chin. AP’s nose is quite large. lol. I pictured Jace to have a long narrow, more pointy noise. I can’t even begin to describe to you how DETAIL Jace looks inside my head. Usually we picture a hair color, a height, skin color, and maybe a shaped face, but never actual true details to the face. Magnus, Jace, Luke, and Clary are the only characters in that book that I have a distinct image of in my head. More so Magnus and Jace. You can’t force us to see JCB every time we read, or every time we draw. That’s just not fair. I just don’t picture him at all. I have faith in Jamie, yes. But he is still not what I saw when I first started reading City Of Bones, and he is still not what I see when I read now. I’m sorry, just not what I see inside my mind. I already created a true visual for myself, no one, no actor will change that… not even AP.

        • Jersey121

I think Cassie wasn’t not posting fan art that wasn’t JCB she refused to post fanart that was AP. I believe she would still post pieces with drawn versions of Jace however people pictured him in their minds. :)

          • Scrotty

No I wasn’t talking about Cassie, I understand why she was doing it. It was more towards Torontogirl98, not that I am trying to start anything, I was just saying if some people like doing photoshops of Jace, and just feel really strongly on JCB not being very attractive, than they have every right to express that. :) And I understand completely why Cassie is refusing to blog photoshops of AP, I’m sure it’s because people are being a little obsessive about it. I agree that AP is the better looking guy, but there’s no hope for him EVER being Jace. He just seriously doesn’t want the role. *Shrugs* nothing we can do about it. Again, I was just saying that people have the right to express how they feel when it comes to the looks of Jace. Deviantart and whatever other websites there are to post your art, are meant for YOU to express YOUR imagination. Not to express other people’s imagination. It’s a little hard to SEE what other people imagine in their heads. ;P Even I will use AP or other guys in my photoshops because I just have a hard time seeing JCB as Jace, but it’s mostly for my stories anyway, I don’t even want Cassie to blog mine, I tried to get her to blog one of my manips of JCB but she didn’t tweet back :( It made me a sad panda. lol jk. She gets like a million tweets, I am lucky she responded to one of my comments on LiveJournal once. lol

          • torontogirl98

Yeah I don’t mean anything against AP but I love looking at fan art with JCB but other things like drawings and stuff are really cool. I was simply referring to the point that people are still wishfully promoting AP as Jace. I just want people to stop using Ap and use JCB. I love other “made up” images I just hate all of the AP stuff not that we know JCB is Jace we should not use another actor for videos and pictures

          • MalecBiggestFanGurrl

Yeah its the same thing with Mangus, she won’t post anything if the actor they want to portray Mangus isn’t Asian.

      • Scrotty

Yeah, no I agree. People are pretty much living a dream. It’s just not going to happen. He seriously does not want the role. And actually we should all be grateful that they even considered him for us. Because it is SO obvious they considered him because the fan base of TMI was sooooo gung-ho about him. And people who even support Jamie will say that he looks SO MUCH like the Jace we all pictured, BUT he said no. Plain and simple. So the studio had to move on to auditions. It’s better than taking our considerations, because what do we really know about casting, and acting? Not to sound rude. I am a student in film, but I am only a student. Why would I tell professionals how to do their job? haha. I mean not to sound conceited there are some films out there that I swear my 12 year old cousin could do better with. hahaha. But that’s just me. So anyways, I was just saying we who don’t see JCB as Jace just much rather draw our imagination then draw him. And whenever I create banners for my FanFiction I use either AP or blonde models, because I just don’t see it. I would never expect Cassie to use ANY of my banners from my stories. It’s for my stories, not necessarily for TMI. I don’t make very many photoshops for TMI alone. I did make a couple of Jamie, mostly to help me see it better. And I must say, it did help. He still isn’t MY Jace. BUT as long as they feather his hair to make it more curly, thicker, and fuller. And he bulks up a bit. I can handle it. My point is… no matter how good he is at being Jace, or even LOOKING like Jace, I sill have my visual. I’ve been reading these books since 2007, when they first came out. So I think my visual is going to be there no matter what anyway. I still pictured a different looking Hermione for HP, Emma looked great until they tamed her hair waaaay too early in the series. Hermione started taking better care of her hair, and self in the fourth book when they all went to the Yule Ball. Malfoy put a spell on teeth to make them grow, and she went to Madam Pomfrey to get them fixed, and she had her basically make her teeth perfect, because before she had an overbite. THAT was when Hermione started to show her outer beauty, but the films made her look better in the SECOND movie. A bit too premature lol.

      • MalecBiggestFanGurrl

I second that motion :D I’m sure all the JCB supporters would be millionaires about now!
