Alex Pettyfer | Movie Trailer | Review
Yowsers you guys. What to think of this interview? I have taken a while to post this, thinking there would be some sort of re-buttle or answers from SOMEWHERE. Unfortunately, the most I have been hearing is *dramatically loud sigh* “thank goodness he isn’t the lead in ‘Hunger Games’, he would be a disaster to lead any franchise”. AHHHHH!!! WHAT????
I’m not certain where I stand….yet. One thing I’ve learned, is the media can definitely BLOW things up. I will wait for the explanation Pettyfer will undoubtedly be forced to give. And perhaps it will shed some light on the whole business. One other thought….everyone’s reaction to his feelings expressed in this interview, is further validation to the exact point he was making. Just sayin. Oh, and PS. The tattoo was WAY TMI!!!
Go crazy with your thoughts….I would LOVE to hear them, as I’m looking for answers myself

The tattoo was a joke; it actually means Alex.
What he said about acting and LA is actually true. The outrage about this is proof that everyone is always living in fear and that it’s like living in a prison. He couldn’t even give his opinion without people getting mad.
How would people like it if he slagged off your hometown? If he slagged off London or NYC, they’d give him hell. Slagging off LA is sort of conventional as if trying to be cool by saying that, but it’s still a city of over 15 million people, most of whom have nothing to do with Hollywood.
I agree with you 100% on the idea that just because a story is no longer canon it doesn’t mean it can’t still be enjoyed on it’s own merits. A lot of my favourite DC comic stories don’t even rely on the main continuity yet still manage to be iconic and brilliant interpretations of the characters (Grant Morrison’s All Star Superman’ comes to mind).
no one realizes it, and i doubt he even realizes it, but he just so fucking right. about everything.
Oh, people really? That video portrayed him as something completley different than in the actual interview in the magazine.
I hate it how, these days, an actor just says his/her honest opinions about things and then – BOOM. The media just blows it up, and it escalates into something completley and utterly uncalled for.
Alex is just being hoenst.
That’s it.
Nothing more.
So people, get over it.
For God’s sake people get a grip! I too read the interview and he was being sarcastic through the whole thing. First off they asked him if it was true he had a tattoo that said “Thank You” he was probably not prepared for such a out of left field question so he went along with it and joked about it. As for what he said about LA he has a right to say what he wants and there a tons of areas that no one would go after sun down without a body guard..it is a city after all so what is he supposed to say it’s like being in the country? The comment about being an actor was basically props to Johnny Depp for being a phenominal actor and having an incredible career but still manages to have his personal life! I have seen other interviews on you tube and he comes off as a genuinely funny easy going guy. Jace is funny and easy going. If he doesn’t end up getting this role I hope they do find someone who embodies the character and does it justice, but I think Alex may still be our Jace despite the VMAN interview he is getting bashed for. which if I am being honest made me like him that much more!!!
I just read the actual interview. Wow. Even the reporter makes him sound like he’s a nice, laid back guy. He’s done nothing wrong, just express his feelings and the reporter acknowledges that. In fact, they don’t say a single bad thing about him or what he said. So then why is everyone else going crazy over it? Whoever posted the snippits of the interview obviously wanted to make Alex sound like a horrible person. People, please. Do your research before you got off and start to judge a person.
Why don’t they post the actual [video] interview online? The emotions behind words can say a lot and we can’t get that from magazines where they want to blow everything up just for sales. How do we know that he wasn’t laughing when he said this? You know, joking around?
Also, I’ve been to LA countless times and I have to say that I completely agree with him. I hate it. To me it’s just another Mexico [no offense], I mean the streets are dirty, there’s hobos all over the place, many of the people are rude. I’ve never liked it, but it is a pretty place [the nature aspect].
A lot of us say that we want him as Jace, right? Well, wouldn’t Jace say something like this in real life? Honestly, if Alex could act in the same way that he actually is in real life then he would be a perfect Jace. He’s my number one for Jace and I really hope he accepts the role. We’re just waiting for him.
and obviously, his attitude IS Jace.
Lol… I have heard other people bad mothing LA, but so what? We cant all love Hollywood. The media loves it when they have the chance to make a young celeberety look like a total asshole, so ofc it is totally overrated in a normal persons opinion. I think he is funny, and its great that he’s doesnt take himself too seriously. He may be a bit arrogant, but its not like that affects me as a person. Hell, I dont even live in the same country as he does xD
I dont know if he is my ideal Jace as a person and as an actor, but like some other peeps said: He is PERFECT if you only want a handsome face. We need to be open minded, people: no matter how good looking and Jace-ish he is ; )
Sorry for bad spelling. English is not my mother tongue.
I support a movie with or without Alex, but I was expecting another publicity stunt where he got into a huge fight in public, or he said something racist, or something a long those lines. I have to admit that I laughed too when I watched the video. But it was more because I was expecting something much worse.
However, Q said EVERYTHING!!! He blabbered his mouth way too early in his career. Not good, when you are starting out at all. Going to film school and all, I would probably look at other guys before looking at him for a role. THIS is why I would never be an actor! You don’t get to speak freely as much as you’d like. At least not in this situation. That’s why I am in school for Productions, not acting. But I am sure I am not going to be much different from him if I get famous. I know all of the media and Hollywood is going to hate me. For instance I always tell if everyone IF I EVER get to go to the Oscars, I am wearing fake jewlry up the yin-yang! I cannot STAND these actresses that show up wearing these RIDICULOUS diamond jewlry I have EVER seen in my entire life! And they don’t even OWN them. They rent them for millions of dollars, and I think that is the biggest money waster I have ever heard. And I am NOT afraid to tell any reporter that, and that’s also the main reason I wear fake jewlry to the Oscars. Because for each diamond that was on that disgusting necklace that NIcole Kidman wore…. an African Child was murdured! And there were A LOT of diamonds on that necklace, more than I have ever seens….. People will hate me if I ever get famous.
Well, if you’re a producer at a red carpet event, I don’t think the media will really bother you much (just dress nicely/decently) because they’ll be so focused on the celebrities. There are smart ways of bad-mouthing Hollywood paparazzi and glam culture that actually improves your image – use wit not anger.
I think Alex’s main mistake was not being specific. He should have focused his anger on Hollywood media or party/socialite/alcohol culture – saying that LA is a “shit-hole” is really dumb because LA is HUGE (around 90 cities and 10 million people; greater Los Angeles has 18 million people). There’s no way of stereotyping that many people. Saying that LA is “socially disgusting” is basically not acknowledging the absolute social/ethno-cultural diversity within the area.
But given my bias (because I’m from the LA area) – it kind of annoys me when fans jump to Alex’s defense by subscribing to the idea that LA is only entertainment culture (there’s a lot more to LA – just look at all the top notch universities in the area, the important economic/technological activity, and all the recreational activities that Alex mentioned).
I thought Hugh Laurie (on one of his appearances on Ellen) handled the LA issue beautifully – he said that he felt that it was like a “gas station” at first, but you just have to peel the “scab” off before you can enjoy it.
But I would also support a CoB movie with or without Alex – I actually have thought of a defense argument for him (with an accompanying counter-argument).
“Well, if you’re a producer at a red carpet event, I don’t think the media will really bother you much (just dress nicely/decently) because they’ll be so focused on the celebrities.” Oh yes, thank GOD for that! I know! I have had many people ask me why I don’t want to be an actress, because of course I have to take some acting classes, and been told I’m pretty good, but my answer is always the fact that the pressure of the media and all the drama bullshit will just piss me off. lol. Besides I’d rather make movies(stories) than be IN them.
And the LA thing. Totally agree! I’m not from California at all, but it’s a little ignorant that people will be so quick to judge a place that they haven’t even been to. True, not everyone has to enjoy it. My uncle lived in LA for quite a few years doing broadway gigs, and he said it’s beautiful but not his kind of place. He’s really excited to have moved back to FL, me? I’ll NEVER move back to FL, which is my home. So a place can’t be judged by one person, only by your own personal experience. I get royally pissed at people who want to judge NY like that. I’m originally from NY, and I love it there much more than FL, and I lived most my years there. But I hate it when people tell me that people there are rude, stuck up and that the place sucks and blah blah blah. Most of the time people who say this to me have never been there. And the people who loved it, has obviously been there.
As for Alex’s very sudden outburst against LA, I agree he probably meant to be more about Hollywood, and the media, and should’ve been more specific. I see him as another Sean Penn or Leonardo DiCaprio. Starts out as a cocky, big mouthed, opinionated, douchebag- and then the next we see him getting nominated for Oscars. He’ll learn his lesson when he gets older. It’s kind of weird knowing he’s younger than me. When I’m only 22, and everyone thinks I’m 16 or 18. (Grrr)
hahaha im probably goin the same direction if i become a famous singer (and im not a terrible singer, im actually really good.) but yea i hate it when they wear all that diamond crap. its just a waste. i mean maybe like one or two small diamond neklaces but thats probably it
madison and Scrotty: I approve of less bling, and more class =)
Scrotty: I totally empathize with the it’s weird that Alex is younger than me (by 4 months) – especially since it seems that he aged so fast! (and the facial hair certainly doesn’t help)
I also empathize with the looking younger-than-you-are thing- I’m a little less than 5 feet tall, East Asian, never wear make-up, and both of my parents have baby-faces. But the way I see it, this whole looking young needs to stay – when I’m in my 50s, people will hopefully think that I’m a lot younger than that =D
I’ve been to NY during the public transportation strike – I thought it was fine and that the people handled it well. NY city does have the bustling feel, but I feel like that’s an urban thing.
Alex Pettyfer just might end up being successful – I really think success in show-business is a matter of luck, talent, and personality. Of course, Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn are both originally from Cali – so home-field advantage? =P
But I’m actually thinking that Alex’s behavior recently is kind of odd (which Nic observed several posts down) – he seemed really personable in earlier interviews. However, it’s still a lack of professionalism. So, we’ll see what happens I guess.
Honestly, I really DO NOT want Alex to be playing Jace. The majority of Alex P fans are judging him by his looks. So what if he looks almost exactly like the Jace you had in mind? We need someone who can ACT. I’m not saying Alex can’t act, just that he doesn’t have potential for the role of Jace.
Jace’s personality needs to be played properly otherwise his punch lines will just come out weird and he won’t be the Jace from the TMI series.
There has been a lot of argument on the roles chosen for The Hunger Games series. I personally believe that the actor for Peeta looks like Gale and the actor for Gale looks like Peeta. But why not swap them around if that’s so? Because they have been specifically chosen on how they can ACT. Some people also believe that the actors for Peeta and Gale are ‘ugly’. Well guys. Do you want the series to be a flop because the actors needed to look ‘hotter’?
I don’t want the actors to be specifically chosen by their looks, but how much experience they have and if they are fit to play the role.
And the tattoo thing. It’s all just a misunderstanding but that doesn’t exactly improve on what people think of him =/ Geesh.
Yeah, choosing someone who can act is definitely more important than looks. But I was also thinking – if ‘The Hunger Games’ fans are already turning against Alex, that’s bad for TMI because we want to convert those people to TMI fans.
And I agree with you about the tattoo thing.
OH MY GOD!!! So true!!! You said it all. BUT
I do believe this was blown out of hand. I think if he really was insulting, I wouldn’t be laughing right now. lol. I laughed through the whole thing. Not because he was courageous, right, or just being funny, but because of the reporters and the way they spoke of it. BUT he was stupid for talking like that so early in his career. That’s why I feel like he’s one of those ‘Outburst’ people. I think if all of this is true, something happened to make him be so reckless like this. Part of me wants to think the break up thing. Believe it or not, people do crazy things when they are in love, and all of this bad publicity has started since then. He could be acting out, because he’s deeply hurt, and depressed… I don’t know. I’m just throwing stuff out there. *Shrugs*
AAAHHH Stupid computer! I was trying to respond to Q’s post. grrrr. Just pretend that’s responding to Q’s post. =P
I agree to some of your points – I guess he does kind of seem to be one of those ‘I’m just gonna talk’ kind of people. But the VMAN interview was planned – it was a sit-down interview. If he had vented at LA in passing – for example, if he was hounded by the paparazzi and just said it, I don’t think anyone would have really cared. But saying something like that in an interview setting was kind of silly. Especially since the ‘how do you like LA?’ question is something that gets asked a lot in interviews. He should have had a plan to back up the “socially disgusting” claim with something good (and probably avoided the cursing).
And letting a break-up interfere with professionalism is kind of… silly? But I understand that point. I was actually just thinking of some ways to defend Alex, and I have something thought out (and a rebuttal to that thought), but I’m waiting to see if other people make any sort of defense besides the ‘he’s entitled to his opinion.’ I mean, the people in NAMBLA are also entitled to their opinion – doesn’t mean I have to like it.
Oh yeah, also – if he had joked about having an “Exit Only” tattoo that you mentioned – that would have been kind of brilliant (not recommended, but sassy).
Hahahahaha to the tattoo thing. =P
Yea I agree 100% he was a little harsh, and pretty stupid about it. He’s a dude, and most dudes are immature… no offense to dudes out there. I agree about the break up thing too. I believe in love and all that, but I also believe in handling it like an adult. Which we’re all different, and react to things differently. Unfortunately some act out when they shouldn’t. Again, I am guilty of it too. =/ I was just throwing the break up thing out there, because it seems to be the start of all of this. Nothing happened until then *raises eyebrow* I just think it’s weird. I could be wrong though.
Well, regarding guys – he got ER tattooed on his wrist (very visible spot) – that’s kind of silly.
But I think you might be right! Because his earlier interviews show him as a lot more outgoing and personable. But it’s still kind of lame if it was over a break-up ._.
His interviewing skills are kind of inconsistent – he’s great in some and awkward in others. Like there’s an interview (it’s posted on youtube) that he did with Vanessa Hudgens for ‘Beastly,’ and that was kind of awkward. Or rather, he looked very uninterested, which is not good when you’re promoting a romance.
He also wasn’t very good at advertising “I Am Number Four” on Ellen – he could’ve explained the movie more before Ellen turned the conversation to Dianna Agron. I was actually completely uninspired by their promo of the movie; but he was pretty good in the interview in Jake’s Takes (but Jake is a fantastic interviewer, so…)
(I’m basically trying to put things into the – how is he going to end up advertising CoB if he is cast as Jace? Are his emotional issues going to interfere with things? Is his inability to flatter the correct people going to push people away from CoB?) And the shallower/superficial part of me hopes he doesn’t age as quickly as he has – because if they continue with more films, at this rate with the casting, he’s going to be a lot older than 16-17 by CoA and CoG. I’m less concerned with Lily because she looks young (like a pixie, and I mean this in a good way).
Yea, and I kind of feel like Ellen isn’t a great interviewer. Don’t get me wrong I think she’s hilarious, but she has a habit of not letting her guests talk. I think she did the same to Alex. Every time they talk, she talks. Actually Family Guy made fun of that. =P But anyways, I just find his recent behavior odd. Wether it’s the break up, his dog got hit by a car, but all of this is new. It’s unprofessional, but we also don’t know what’s going on in his life to make him so quick to say things. I could be wrong, but I just find it odd. IF any of this is even true, because idk if we got a response from him or his agents yet about this.
Some stars, especially ones who are new, don’t realize that negative public behavior causes the media to slam you, even when you aren’t doing or saying anything. So whether he meant those things or not, the media is slamming the hell out of him now, because of the first act. A lot of actors who are successful now learned the hard way when they were younger, like Scrotty said. And if you haven’t noticed, it’s mostly boys who act out, because most boys don’t understand how to shut their mouth at appropriate times. Like my boyfriends, who can’t seem to get a long with my family. I tell him all the time, just don’t effing talk to them! BUt does he listen to me? Nooooo, he has to run his mouth and cause a fight. Most men are like that no matter how old they get. They fly off the handle too much!
Hahaha, I thought the interview was funny. And who cares about the tattoo thing?! I may even get a tattoo above my ass in italian that says “Exit Only” I have often thought about it. And Jace would soooooo get a tattoo that says “Thank You” just above… or below… his belly button. And all the things he said about Hollywood is true, and maybe even acting as well. The only thing I don’t get is Why act if you’re unhappy with it? Which he might not be unhappy, he might be going through some bad stuff and that could be why he has such a negative attitude. People tend to have this… “I don’t care what I say or do, I am just going to say what I’m feeling and just not give a shit.” I am the exact same way. I deal with that crap with my fam all the time. They’ll do something to piss me off, or hurt my feelings, and I’ll start saying really really mean things to everyone to show how angry I truly am. He just seems the same way!
I don’t think he’s unhappy with acting, I think he’s unhappy with the business. Like he said, it’s show business, not show art (or something like that, I don’t have the article in front of me). Most actors are actually.
I still love Alex, I agree with everyone who’s saying it’s not a big deal and that he is still the perfect Jace!
So, uh, now that I’ve seen it, would people explain why others are making such a big deal about this. I mean, seriously, It’s really not that bad.
I actually wrote an article about Alex a few weeks ago on my blog. It’s gotten quite a bit of attention (even reaching MI forums and Cassandra Clare). Here’s a link to that: http://staceyoneale.wordpress.com/2011/03/20/alex-pettyfer-as-jace-wayland/
I’d like to say that the tattoo thing was a joke. His tattoo really means “Alex”. It’s showed up on several websites so if that’s gotten you upset, then no worries. My major issues with Alex are his overall attitude and acting ability. I don’t feel he’s mature enough to head up a franchise. Mortal Instuments, in my opinion, is the next Twilight in terms of sales. We need an actor who can carry that on his shoulders with some grace. Someone who can be a great counterpart to Lily Collins who has been amazing with the press and with fans. I’d like to see someone like that in the role of Jace. Someone who will appreciate the opportunity and deliver the character that we all love so much. I wasn’t at all impressed with Alex’s acting ability in Beastly or I Am #4. I wanted to see more emotion, especially in Beastly.
In closing, I’d like to see them pick a no name for the role. Someone with no ego and tons of acting talent. Someone who will be excited about the opportunity and go above and beyond to help the film find success. Like with Twilight and Vampire Diaries, they went for actors with talent instead of well known actors. They found great success and I think TMI should go that route.
But if he hates Hollywood, why be a movie actor? Just go back to England and do theater or find something that’s not going to be filmed in LA.
I thought Q made several interesting points – like, most of the people working on CoB are going to be from LA, it would be weird working with someone who was hating on your city. And cassieclare (twitter) says that her next shadowhunter series is going to be in LA (so she obviously likes it).
I thought the tattoo comment was weird. If he is cast at Jace, I hope he learns to get his act together so he can advertise TMI well. Because I really want them to make movies for all three of the books. His publicity problems are actually making me more meh to him being Jace – he looks the part, but he needs to attract people (besides his looks) to the movie and Lily’s working so hard to make fans happy, she deserves someone who can do that with her =)
OK, let me just say three things..
1. He has all the right to say what he thinks, it’s called “freedom of speech.”
2. He is right about Hollywood and the whole acting career.
3. Did I mention he is TOTALLY RIGHT ABOUT HOLLYWOOD AND BEING AN ACTOR??!!
Yeah, what he said was kinda harsh but it’s true, when you’re famous you can hardly have a private life cause EVERYONE wants to know what you do, who you date, what you say AND if you just so happen to make a mistake because you’re bound to make one (we are human), the reporters bash you and make you’re life a living hell! And then you’re obligated to make a public apology just so people can can get on with their life and start talking bad things about another actor/singer/player/author, etc… Now that is the ugly truth about Hollywood..
thats completely true!
yeaa..ok but if he hates it so much why doesnt he come back to england?
its not mature at all to be chatting shit about the city u live in. it sounds really obnoxious and that hes not grateful for the 3 opportunities to star in potentially big movies. personally i think hes getting desperate for attention bcos his movies flopped. and many people criticised his ‘acting’
I don’t know how many times I have to say Beastly was not a flop for people to start believing it. He doesn’t go back because acting is something he loves to do. Where’s the best place to be for that? I think you know the answer. It would just show that he’s weak if he does go back. And it doesn’t make him sound ungrateful. It makes him sound honest. You don’t have to like living in Hollywood to be grateful for the chances you’ve gotten. Lots of people’s acting is criticized, and they’re still around.
I mean, Beastly did make money – but it also received lots of negative reviews (17% on Rotten Tomatoes is pretty bad); so it depends on what you mean by flopped.
Alex should have been more careful in the way he phrased it – it’s fine to be displeased with Hollywood, a lot of actors have criticized it. But they were specifically targeting paparazzi/media culture – not LA as a whole (which Alex kind of did since his geography praise encompasses Los Angeles County rather than LA city). Someone described Alex’s attitude as ‘spitting in the hand that feeds you’ – which I think sounds reasonable.
And acting talent is not concentrated in LA (and a lot of films are now produced elsewhere due to state costs) – a lot of actors build their credentials and experience through theater first. England, LA, New York, and many other places are great for that – you can avoid a lot of paparazzi/media problems while gaining credit for talent rather than hype.
By flop, I mean how much it made compared to how much it cost to make. That’s just about all the movie studios really care about. And some people actually liked the movie. I know lots of people that thought it was a good love story/chick flick. I don’t check critics sites, so I don’t know anything about that.
Even if he just straight up doesn’t like LA, I assure you he wouldn’t be the first person to not like it there. So I don’t see why it would be such a bad thing to voice that. It’s the equivalent to if I were to say I hated the place I live in, even though I have a job there.
I didn’t say acting talent was concentrated in LA, – I know there are great acting opportunities outside of LA – but it is where people go for MORE opportunities. If an actor or actress moves to LA, he or she has a better shot at getting roles simply because there are more. No, they are not filmed there and some not even cast there, but it is better for your career, otherwise they might not have gone there in the first place. As for theater, that’s a completely different game from making a movie. Some actors may not be confident enough to do it or simply may not like it.
This guy is Jace in the flesh! And seriously as an Australian who has travelled all throughout the states, you guys really need to lighten up a little! Especially when it comes to Sex! Even if the tatt said Thank You, which apparently it doesn’t, at least his mamma taught him his manners! He’s just trying to be polite! Ha Ha before you are all outraged I’m just kidding. Although it really wouldn’t bother me…Alex is still my perfect Jace and Max Irons is my perfect Simon and Eric Dane is my perfect Valentine and Jensen Ackles is my perfect Luke……and so many hot guys in one movie would be like a little slice of heaven on film. Thanks always to Cassie for these awesome characters!
Maybe he was trying to channel Jace? LOL! Cause that is exactly something Jace would say or do.
hahahaha thats true!!!
You really have to get the physical copy of the magazine-the whole thing reads differently in print and the following quote was left out by all the news outlets that excerpted the quotes (not out of context per se but I would say without context)
“I’m going to slag off LA so badly, and you’re going to write every word, and it’s going to be so f–cking funny”
I saw Alex up close on Feb 4th when he appeared at the apple soho store in NYC to promote IAN4-I literally watched him the entire time and I honestly believe that he is kind of introverted and shy which can read negatively (especially in a red carpet situation) I have also read a number of things online and on twitter when regular everyday people encountered him and said he was very personable.
I guess only time will tell what is to come.
ugh! you actually saw alex pettyfer??!?!?!?! NO FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!
there were only like 50 people there-I should have gone up to him after but I didn’t-that was a mistake. Oh and for the record Alex has definitely covered the emma tattoo on the ring finger (clearly visible in the vman photos) he still has little lamb on his right wrist/lower forearm. the behind the scenes of the photo shoot is here which is pretty swoon worthy-however Alex smoking is yucky please quit.
http://www.usmagazine.com/video/alex-pettyfer-shows-off-his-raunchy-tattoos
YEA YOU SHOULDVE GONE UP TO HIM!!!!!!! and yea please quit smoking that is yucky. but anyway……..THATS STILL NOT FAIR!!!! IM SOOOOOO JEALOUS.
Hahaha. If you don’t love this, then you don’t truly love Jace!
Haha I totally didn’t think of it that way, he is totally channeling Jace and I love it!
I think Alex is young and inexperienced with dealing with the media. His dislike of Hollywood comes as no surprise to me, and I’m sure the interviewer to great pleasure in twisting his words to make everything sound worse than he meant it. I believe Alex is being treated harshly just for the fun of it. Don’t listen to all the nonsense. I still believe he will be a fantastic Jace. Hang in there Alex!
i also get mad when te reporters take bits out of every sentnce and combined those peices to make something stupid. thats what they did
What an ass. He’s probably right about Hollywood, but that tattoo real or not is disgusting.
12 Positive comments and 1 negative… That speaks for itself! I honestly feel that Alex is a genuine person! I totally agree with Jess: this thing is going out of proportions! Freedom of speech people! I think that he is conscious that this article might affect his career (quote from VMAN: “I’m going to slag off L.A. so badly, and you’re going to write every word, and it’s going to be so fucking funny.”), but he does not give a damn… He’s a rockstar!
Please Alex: do not change! Be true to who you are!
Pfft, this has been blown way out of proportion!
Some people just an not take a joke. his tatto that he mentions does not say thankyou, it says alex in japanese. Reporters should actually research before they put this stuff out there. As for his take on Hollywood, that’s his opinion, so what? Atleast he’s not pretending to be something he’s not.
When I read the artcile I was actually laughing at how horrified the reporter was with him using the C word. In England, it isn’t just referring to women, it’s men as well. It’s the same in Australia too. Sure some people don’t like swearing, but if he wants to swear. go for it. He’s just expressing himself.
I still like him, scratch that, love him. Anyone who isn’t scared to speak their mind is okay with me. I much rather that than someone who is permanantly kissing someones ass.
Considering that most of these comments are in support of Alex – I feel that there should be another dissenting voice (and I’m not in the mood to write about neo-liberalism for a final paper due later).
First off – I think people are more offended by his attitude/delivery of his opinion rather than the opinion itself. Sure, he can be crude if he wants – but it doesn’t help his own reputation (which shows a remarkable lack of tact). Also, he calls LA an “insidious pool where everyone lives in fear” and that it’s “socially disgusting.”
Since a majority of TMI fans want Alex to play Jace, we should remember that many of the people working on the CoB movie will be from Los Angeles (or people who moved there and are now part of entertainment culture). In fact, both Cassandra Clare and Lily Collins have homes in LA. He knows that he’s in-demand as Jace, so again, it shows a remarkable lack of social-respect to diss the home-area of potential colleagues and co-workers. Lily studies broadcast journalism at USC – both of which are part of Hollywood and LA culture. What would it feel like working closely with someone who publically and disrespectfully lambasted something you want to be involved in? (Of course, it’s possible she doesn’t like the culture either – regardless, she might be coupled into that “everyone” of his statement. But then again, micro-analyzing his words when it’s spoken might be silly since he obviously wasn’t thinking things through before he spoke).
People who have said that Alex was just voicing his opinion should remember that actors don’t work or speak in a vacuum – when they speak, they represent something and are spokesmen for whatever project they’re working on – present or future. It’s not just the public that observes – the people who the actor might work with in the future are also watching. The fact that he might have offended a lot of entertainment industry people is ignorant on his part.
I respect and support him for not wanting to participate in alcohol, drug, and party culture – but seriously, there are many, many different things to do and different people in LA (it’s a big place). Of course, he has also expressed paparazzi problems (which would make him trying to find something to do hard) and I full-heartedly support his anti-paparazzi stance, but what was he was expecting as an actor? It’s not like England doesn’t have a paparazzi problem either.
Second – the tattoo. From what I’ve read, I do feel that he was joking about it – but it was crass and I personally don’t think it’s funny. Why is it ok that he joked about something that COULD be construed as demeaning towards women? The location of the tattoo and nature of the statement – saying “thank you” in case he forgets – is full of hidden assumptions and implications that he really should have thought about. Especially since his fan-base is largely female (and so are many gossip-reporters who are looking for controversial statements).
The wink implies that he knew he was being “cocky” – and again, why did he (or the fandom “we”) feel that this kind of statement should be ignored as “just a joke” even if it was said in passing?
Third – there have already been reports of questionable behavior. This interview, regardless of whether it’s been blown out of proportion or not – the quotes should be relatively accurate, support previous notions of his attitude problems. Actors work with teams of people, and people generally don’t want to (and shouldn’t have to) deal with cocky behavior. Just because the character of Jace is snarky doesn’t mean the actor has to be – you’re just supposed to act like it during the appropriate times (and this early in his career is not exactly appropriate – especially if he plans on progressing from the YA genre in the future).
Again with the Hollywood bashing – the whole Charlie Sheen fiasco isn’t that far out of the public mind, as a young actor, he really should be more careful what kind of public statements he makes (or what he’s going to be compared to). His “honesty” isn’t courageous – it’s naive (which is interesting since he says that he’s already realized that it’s “show-business” and not just “show-art”).
As an aside, after reading comments online (not just on this site – but other places), I feel that some people who adamantly support Alex for Jace defend him for not succumbing to Hollywood superficiality and support his criticisms of LA as glamorized and shallow. Many of those people have also criticized other actors suggested for Jace as “ugly” or ‘just doesn’t feel like Jace’ or ‘I refuse to watch CoB if Alex is not Jace.’ Calling an actor ugly (when obviously many people think those actors are hot and appropriate for the role) is potentially even more shallow and superficial than what Alex is accusing of in his tirade on LA. Just my (very long, hopefully eloquent) thoughts.
can´t agree more. You said it all.
OMG! You said EXACTLY what I wanted to say! Thank you!
great argument! this sums up my stance better than i could ever hope to articulate!
Wow big deal can people not speak their mind anymore without being crucified, have a sense of humor people. I still love Alex, he is still my Jace!
i agree with him because its true! and these reporters just make a big deal out of it. ITS HIS OPINION. its not fair that people bash him and stuff when he is saying what he feels. hes not a bad person if u think about what he is saying. some people are getting annoying
Wasn’t so bad. From the hype I thought there would be racial slurs or something. The tattoo was funny, probably meant for a laugh. The hollywood stuff is probably true. I don’t see the problem with the interview.
I don’t understand why everybody is making a huge deal out of this. I didn’t find the interview to be bad. He was honest, and not afraid to tell the truth. Isn’t it a good thing he isn’t kissing everybody’s ass? The tattoo, he was joking about. It actually says Alex in Japanese. Go to Google translate if you don’t believe me. The c word isn’t a terrible word where he’s from. And the things he said about L.A. is true. It’s not what people think it is. This interview only made me like him more than I did.
Im happy to see him not trying to kiss everyones butt just because they think he should. He is honest about what he thinks and feels and I thought that he should be respected for that.Remember you have to respect that everyone has a right to and opinion even if you dont respect what their opinon is.As for the tatoo… I think its hystarical.
It’s about time SOMEBODY said it.
Whatever, the media will always find someway to make them look bad. It’s blown way out of proportion. This didn’t change my standing with Alex;it’s a barely significant, spur-of-the-moment interview. If Alex ends up playing as Jace, I will die happily.
Yeah…. even if the tattoo WAS truely ment to say ‘thank you’, which it isnt, I thought it was HILARIOUS. Oh heven forbid some one gets a stupid tattoo. Back off, folks, it was a joke.
And I agree, the media is BLOWING THIS UP! I guess it was a slow news day, huh? Couldn’t find ANYTHING more important to broadcast??
The media has blown things out of proportion. I’m convinced that they’re out to destroy him, I know that he’s doing that himself, alright. BUT they should have done some research BEFORE rehasing the same things from another source i.e E!’s d-bag Ted Casablanca. That man is a hypocrite.
What he said in the interview wasn’t THAT bad except for the swearing of course. He was clearly joking about that tattoo thing. That little wink even gave it away. I knew what it actually meant so I wasn’t shocked or disgusted like some gullible people were. *rolls eyes* It’s ‘Alex’ in Japanese not ‘thank you.’ He was just being cheeky. LOL.
As for the c word, he wasn’t bashing women or being misogynist, I would know being coming from the UK. That word is not a degrading term for women here like it’s in the US. The word is equivalent to jerks, f–kers, a–holes etc. I’d suggest that people take things about Alex with a grain of salt.
In my opinion the interview is totally overrated. It wasn’t that bad as they say. The media is doing their best to make Alex look like a total douche. And that’s so annoying.
So, the *real* interview isn’t that bad… I don’t see why people are so angry with him. And btw, his tattoo translates as Alex in Japanese Katakana. So, he was just messing with the interviewer…
Check it out! http://www.vman.com/articles/from-darkness-to-white-2/
The tattoo part was a joke. It really means Alex in Japanese.
And the word cunt for those in England is just like the word fuck or dickhead for those in the US. He didn’t talk about women.
And so what if he doesn’t like LA socially? I bet there’s a lot of people who doesn’t like LA, Alex just had the courage to be honest.
People have really overreacted over this interview. He was honest and sarcastic. It really isn’t that bad.
hypocrite.
he doesnt get to bash hollywood like this-its kinda true but u just dont say those things. he comes out looking like a brat-hes just looking for attention bcos his 5 mins of fame is over and he was ‘all hype no hits’
